I stumbled upon this article by coincidence, but I read it. It's really like yelling at the sun to stop being so goddamn bright. I live in Denmark, a country that consumes just above 11 litres of pure alcohol per person above 14 + about 1800 units of cigarettes, cigars and the like every year. I believe it's top 5. Me, I get drunk 2-3 times a week, and I just find it awkward that "pregaming" and "main event" are used to designate how overbearing one should be toward students (i.e., young people/the kind that those who compiled this article obviously detest) drinking in a certain situation. Alcohol is one of the oldest companions of Man. And grandest. I'm just happy that I don't have the American mentality to deal with when I drink. Making programs and guiding student/people who want help or are obviously too binged to do anything else is fine, but let people get drunk like they want to. They need it in this world.

P.S. I drank a bottle of wine tonight, and I was utterly by myself, listening to music and writing. Now I'll sleep so I'm not too wasted for tomorrows 40-person party (where the pregame starts as soon as I'm out of class at 2.)

Cheers

I agree with Christina. When going for a houseparty we rarely drink more then one beer each while waiting on our friends to join, before going to the party. When we are going out clubbing we try to consume a majority of the nights alcohol at home and when we get to the club we simply take two shots, one beer or share a bottle of champagne. Simply because the price raises about 6-20 times when you are at a club.

The only thing recent about it is what they're calling it. My friends and I engaged in this same activity 25 years ago, and for the same reasons. There were people back then suggesting the same kinds of solutions. Imagine that.

I think the one factor that is consistently missed in articles on 'pregaming' (I use quotes because here in my part of Canada, we call it 'pre-drinking') is cost. It's not often that I've seen 'pregaming' happen before a house party, where people bring their own booze anyway; I usually see it happen before going out to a bar, because often bar prices are simply higher than what you'd pay if you went to the liquor store to buy the same thing. If you drink store-bought alcohol before going to the party, you can (if you know and stick to your limits) save quite a bit of money at the bar. Pretty simple.

The same phenomenon exists in Germany, where it is usually called 'vorglühen' ('pre-heat' or 'raise to initial temperature') and as far as I can see, there is one main reason we do it: Money. Believe it or not, it's actually a lot cheaper to talk/drink at someone's own place and then go to hit the floor somewhere than meeting up in a pub and changing locations later.
I don't really see much of a difference between the two. And yeah, if I hadn't belonged to the pub-going variety, I'd have made sure to be royally drunk by the time everyone went out to dance. I've always detested the crowded conditions there (and would usually head home when the others left for another place) and it would have taken massive amounts of alcohol to convince me to go.
I guess lots of social anxiety and no money equals pregaming. ;-)

Christ, why don't they just skip the party and hang out with the people they feel comfortable enough with that they don't have to get plastered first? If they dislike parties enough that they have to anaesthetise themselves before going, why go?

I know, I know ... they're kids. *sigh*
