A close friend of mine from Brazil sent me an email with some interesting comments that I wanted to share on his behalf:

Although Brazil is responsible for one third of carbon emissions in South America, it's proportional to our economic importance in comparison with the other countries. In no way i'm defending carbon emissions (obviously not :)), but it could be a lot worse. Our energy matrix is greatly based on hydroeletric generation: we're luckly on havin tons of rivers that helps us in producing energy. Itaipu was the biggest of the world, but it was surpassed by the monstrous chinese hydroeletric plant. And we're planning on building the third greatest one.

Other interesting aspect is our ethanol project. We're pionneers on it, since the seventies. Nowadays our sugar cane-based ethanol is cheapier and better than the corn-based one. But on the other hand, I don't know if you knew about it, we discovered a large amount of oil in the pre salt geological layer. Probably it will be exploited and consumed which means a lot more emission.

And another point in carbon emission is that a significant percentual is caused by forest burning. This is probably known by you. Cause: expansion of the agro bussiness and its bounder which is getting into the Amazon Forest. We need to produce soya, our economic superavits are based on exporting soya to the chinese.

On population, we're slowing down in growth. We keep growing, but in a slower pace now. The richest are producing less and less children, while the poores ones are like rabbits. Conclusion: heavy social problems in the near future, maybe bigger than tue nowadays ones...

I'll stop here cause your article is a lot more based on scientific info than the things I'm saying. But I'd like to add that besides on limiting human growth, which is important, reducing carbon emission is also a question of life changing - the task of a new way of life to every human being in the entire world, based on low energy consumption in the everyday activities. It would require a great level of individual conciousness. An impossible task though.
